That Sinking Feeling

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Thankfully we have had no sinking incidents at the Marina Pez Vela on the coast of Guatemala depsite all of the rain – but the same cannot be said of Guatemala City where a huge sink hole opened early in the season thanks to the first of the Summer tropical storms.

The weather has not been very kind this summer season, but the fishing in Guatemala has remianed strong and remarkably consistent all the way through. The water gushing from the highlands has pushed a lot of debris out to sea that has provided some fantastic dorado fishing. You normally associate “gaffer” dolphin with “schoolies” – but we have had schools of dolphin in the 10lb class at the stern of the boat on many occasions. This provides some outstanding light tackle and flyfishing opportunities.

Natural Bait in Guatemala for fishing

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Not quite natural disasters – but yet another volcano started to spew ash over the highlands of Guatemala this week – but it didn’t seem to interrupt the fishing.

high as 27,000 feet is an indicator of the potential of activity !

This constant seismic activity does not appear to have any significant impact on the fishing in Guatemala – even the large magnitude quake in March had no noticeable effect on the concentrations of billfish – seems like it is only us land dwellers that are effected by such things. The fishing although slower than a month ago,  has remained quite consistent. Decent numbers of sailfish – but a LOT of Blue Marlin showing. Some days our boats have been reporting 3-5 raises of marlin for the day with perhaps one or two hookups. What has been noticeable however is how concentrated the fishing has been – most days the sportfishing fleet has ended up within a couple of miles of each other over concentrations of bait, but outside of that diameter, the pickings have been slim.

Natural bait was to be found in the City as well, with the Miss Universe regional competition coming to a climax this past weekend.Ms Alejandra Barillas was crowned as Miss Guatemala 2010 and will represent the country in the Miss Universe competition.

Earthquake in Guatemala

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Today there was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Guatemala just South of the Marina towards El Salvador. All of our boats were out fishing at the time – which is probably about the safest place for them when these things happen – but there are no casualties and little damage reported from the coast.

Unusually for Guatemala, we had two cold fronts come through in quick succession that built upon each other to produce some pretty significant seas and blasts of cold air. This often has the effect of scattering the concentrations of bait and making the fishing more challenging – but not this time.

When you come to Guatemala fishing…….

Monday, April 20th, 2009

The good news is that the new airport terminal in Guatemala City (La Aurora, GUA) is just about finished. For anyone who hasn’t visited for a couple of years – you will hardly recognize the place !

The government made a strategic investment to try and develop the region into a Central America hub for air transport – and has so invested heavily in the airport itself as well as surrounding infrastructure such as parking and arrivals. The new terminal is a modern masterpiece of steel and glass, and certainly wouldn’t be out of place in any capital city in the world. The arrivals process has also been significantly streamlined and modernized.

MOST IMPORTANT however when travelling to Guatemala for fishing is to MAKE SURE that you passport has AT LEAST 6 months validity left before renewal. The immigration officers play it strictly by the book, and do not hesitate to put arriving passengers on the next available flight home if their documentation and in particular their passport validity is not up to date. Do it well in advance !!
