We were honoured to welcome the new President of Guatemala to Greatsailfishing recently. While the fishing trip did not raise our normal and recent productivity for sailfish, he was very happy to fill a cooler with Dorado and Tuna.
President Perez Molina was not able to spend the whole day fishing in Guatemala, and so we remained closer to shore, hoping to raise sailfish in the temperature breaks or around bait. Most billfishing this past week was out around 40 miles from shore, so we did not have tiume to Take President Perez Molina that far in pursuit of billfish – but we all had a great day and enjoyed meeting and fishing with him. Despite some tough fishing conditions in Guatemala, we had a successful tournament with 31 competing boats over 4 days bringing an average of 10 billfish to the boat each day. For the full fishing report see here :

The fishing conditions do seem to be settling down – or at least the fish seem to think so as the billfishing in Guatemala has become far more consistent over the course of the last few weeks and as we head into the main part of the fishing season in Guatemala. We have had a couple of fronts come through that have really churned up the water throughout November and the early part of December, but the seas have calmed down a lot in the last few days and we are looking forward to a great fishing season.

And of course…that means fishing in Guatemala !
The blue water has been giving us a runaround for the past week, with strong currents ahead of the new moon shifting the breaks by as much as 30 miles overnight. The Guatemala Fishing fleet has been chasing it however, and we have been finding good numbers of sailfish as well as marlin ranging from 13 – 45 miles out. The numbers have not been huge by Guatemala standards, but at least they are consistent, with pretty much all of our charters raising double digits most days.

If you have been waiting for an economic reason to try the fishing in Guatemala, this could be a great opportunity for a last minute trip while the fishing (and the weather) is still HOT !!
American Airlines announced a quick-fire sale for flights to Latin America that must be booked THIS WEEK – out of several convenient gateways. Happily the travel dates coincide with dates in April when the fishing is still great, the sailfish are still hungry, the weather is warm and we have availability in one of our luxurious Guatemala Fishing Beach Villas.
The peak of the fishing season in Guatemala for billfish is in January and February – as this is when most anglers have seen just about enough of the continuous cold fronts up North – and hanker after some warm weather and outstanding fishing. Guatemala fits all of these criteria, and so prime dates in these months tend to be booked up to a year in advance. See the full report here :

As well as great sailfishing in Guatemala, the country is also known for its clement climate – especially in the highlands. Hence the tag used for 35 years in the country of “Guatemala – Land of Eternal Spring”.
Sometimes however, it doesn’t quite work that way; the fishing in Guatemala has been as changeable as the weather over the Xmas period, although it seems to have settled down now. The seas are calm and the weather is warm – and the fishing is catching up…….boats raising as many as 35 sailfish per day this week, and stil plenty of Blue Marlin around.]

The fishing in Guatemala has settled down into a more noramal and seasonal pattern. The cold that has been ravaging through North America has not made it down as far south as Guatemala – and the cold front that had been affecting the sailfishing in Guatemala over the past week or so has moved away.
The vast concentrations of baitfish that had been around for the last couple of weeks also seem to have dissapated somewhat – making it a little harder for the sailfish and marlin to get a full meal – and so more receptive to our own baits.
we have seen some great fishing recently – see our full report here : http://www.greatsailfishing.com/Guatemala_Fishing_Report.php

The recent cold experienced in the US has been seen in Guatemala as well. Temperatures were in the 70′s this past week for groups fishing in Guatemala. The cooler temperatures and water pushing in have not effected the bite however, with lots of bait in the area the sailfish have been feeding aggressively.
Our boats have been fishing at about 20 miles from the dock where they have found enormous quantities of bait being corralled by hungry sailfish. This made the fishing frustrating at times – particulalrly for those fly-fishing for sailfish. Later in the day however, once the biat became more fragmented, there was lots of action, with boats raising multiple sailfish at the same time on both conventional and fly-fishing tackle.

Every time I want to go somewhere, it seems that all of the cheap flights have disappeared!! Looking for flights for the upcoming peak fishing season in Guatemala however, we came across some great deals direct from Florida for as little as $39 each way.
The season for fishing in Guatemala is considered to be prime from November until May – with February and March being the peak monthns not so much becoase that is when the fishng is best (although that is the case…….) but because the weather in Guatemala is pleasant and warm – making a great break from the harsh winter further North.
If you are considering a trip for fishing in Guatemala, this is a great opportunity to manage it within a tight budget. More of our specials can be found here :

It does seem like this rainy season has been one of the longest and most persistent for many years in Guatemala. This hasn’t stopped us fishing of course, and in all clouds there is a silver lining, even if those clouds tend to be dark and rumbling in the distance !
The fishing has remained quite close in with boats finding good numbers of sailfish as close as fifteen miles from the Marina Pez Vela. Of course the crews would prefer to fish for food for the table particulalrly at this time of year, and so have been happy alsmost every day as we have come across lots of good sized mahi-mahi.
Sailfish are well known for their speed and fighting prowess, but there is little doubt that a hooked dorado can put up an equal fight – especially once they catch a glipse of the boat and perhaps realise what their prospects may be!
