This was a fishing season in Guatemala that faced down many natural challenges – from volcanoes to earthquakes to floods at the tail end of the season.
Throughout it all pretty much we fished usccessfully – and although the climatic effects of the quakes were hard to predict, we were able to continue to raise fish and bring many to the boat throughout.
The weather was more difficult or less predictable than usual – with several cold fronts coming through the region in the peak fishing months of January and Febraury…….but again, the fishing recovered quickly and most days we continued to raise at least double digits of billfish for clients.

Not quite natural disasters – but yet another volcano started to spew ash over the highlands of Guatemala this week – but it didn’t seem to interrupt the fishing.

This constant seismic activity does not appear to have any significant impact on the fishing in Guatemala – even the large magnitude quake in March had no noticeable effect on the concentrations of billfish – seems like it is only us land dwellers that are effected by such things. The fishing although slower than a month ago, has remained quite consistent. Decent numbers of sailfish – but a LOT of Blue Marlin showing. Some days our boats have been reporting 3-5 raises of marlin for the day with perhaps one or two hookups. What has been noticeable however is how concentrated the fishing has been – most days the sportfishing fleet has ended up within a couple of miles of each other over concentrations of bait, but outside of that diameter, the pickings have been slim.
Natural bait was to be found in the City as well, with the Miss Universe regional competition coming to a climax this past weekend.Ms Alejandra Barillas was crowned as Miss Guatemala 2010 and will represent the country in the Miss Universe competition.

Despite some follow on tremors, the huge earthquake in Chile did not have any effect on the fishing in Guatemala. The boats went to sea in search of sailfish, but with a cautious eye towards the waves as the possibility of a rolling tsunami existed.
You may have read how the Hawaiian coastline was largely evacuated lest the wave came ashore. Being roughly in the path between the epicenter and Hawaii, we thought it prudent to at least move the boats from their moorings and set to sea ….. just in case. Of course the local captains had heard it all before and were slightly bemused by the whole thing, but better safe than sorry.
With some delight, minutes past the appointed hour for this huge wave to pass the latitude of the marina, the radios lit up with the chatter over channel 71 that the boats had been hit by a “massive wave” that was estimated at 1.5 feet. They were grinning when they came back to dock at the triumph of local knowledge over gringo science. Still better safe than sorry.

US Secretary of State visits Guatemala at the end of this week, the final stop of her Latin America tour. Unfortunately no time to try the fishing in Guatemala, but we are confident that she will still enjoy her visit. If you are planning a fishing trip to Guatemala, and are arriving anywhere around the time of the entourage, be prepared for some intesns securirt in and around Guatemala City.
Our advice is to head straight to the coast and get out fishing, not time to be trying to sightsee in either the capital or Antigua !

It’s a great idea, who would have thought of that ? Including Guatemala Fishing as a test for the next Olympic sport could have mass appeal. Surely the 20 million fishermen who particiapte regularly can’t be wrong ? Just read our latest fishing report to see what we need to do and have fishing included in the next winter and summer games.

The month has started off well. Since the recent cold fronts blew them selves out, or at least blew themselves away, the fishing in Guatemala has improved significantly. There are many anglers who would regard the period around the full moon as a less productive time to fish, but in this case the common wisdom is that it is the return to a calmer weather pattern and wamer air pushing the blue water in that has mostly contributed to the improved fishing conditions. Started the week of Jan 17th with some great Guatemala fishing – even better we welcomed back old friends the Graham party. They started with a vengeance and really didn’t stop – releasing over 100 sailfish over th course of 5 days. One of the fish in particular – we are awaiting the pictures – was estimated at 150 lbs, and on their last day released a sailfish of an estimated 130lbs on the fly.
The SST charts saved us a ton of fuel and our clients a ton of time searching for the blue water and finding the hot bite. The blue water was moving radicaly from day to day – see our full fishing report here :

When you are thinking of golf destinations, Guatemala may not be the first that comes to mind.
The country is home to five courses and to date has comfortably accommodated the country’s two thousand or so active players.

The fishing this past week has ranged from outstanding to tough – as has the weather ! The storm that is now approaching the Gulf Coast has been busy pushing fronts across all of Central America – and Guatemala was quick to catch a cold ! Barry Jackson and Ron Corsan fished with us this week and had what has become a “typical” days fishing for recent weeks – raising 5 sailfish and lots of Dorado (even had a Wahoo in the mix !). They both hail from Texas and are avid redfishermen -so sails and wahoo was a high speed change for them ! They are down in Guatemala helping out on a mission to support an orphanage, but managed to find the time to spend a day with us at the coast fishing – we sent them home with a five gallon bucket of fresh fish to share at their table……………….for the full fishing report read here :

Greatsailfishing in Guatemala has launched a program to enable single anglers or small groups the opportunity to register and combine a trip with other similar minded anglers.
Frequently the cost of billfishing in Guatemala and other locales can become prohibitive when fishing alone. The only practical way to significantly reduce the individual cost is to find like minded fellow anglers to share a trip. This can be difficult, but Greatsailfishing is now trying to make it easy(er) – register for a trip and we will circulate dates that you can consider – if there is a match, we will attempt to “hook you up” with others and build a shared trip.
All anglers will benefit from their own bedroom (and usually a private bathroom) in one of our private villas. All meals, drinks and transfers are included.
