Still raining but still fishing in Guatemala

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

It does seem like this rainy season has been one of the longest and most persistent for many years in Guatemala. This hasn’t stopped us fishing of course, and in all clouds there is a silver lining, even if those clouds tend to be dark and rumbling in the distance !

The fishing has remained quite close in with boats finding good numbers of sailfish as close as fifteen miles from the Marina Pez Vela. Of course the crews would prefer to fish for food for the table particulalrly at this time of year, and so have been happy alsmost every day as we have come across lots of good sized mahi-mahi.

Sailfish are well known for their speed and fighting prowess, but there is little doubt that a hooked dorado can put up an equal fight – especially once they catch a glipse of the boat and perhaps realise what their prospects may be!

That Sinking Feeling

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Thankfully we have had no sinking incidents at the Marina Pez Vela on the coast of Guatemala depsite all of the rain – but the same cannot be said of Guatemala City where a huge sink hole opened early in the season thanks to the first of the Summer tropical storms.

The weather has not been very kind this summer season, but the fishing in Guatemala has remianed strong and remarkably consistent all the way through. The water gushing from the highlands has pushed a lot of debris out to sea that has provided some fantastic dorado fishing. You normally associate “gaffer” dolphin with “schoolies” – but we have had schools of dolphin in the 10lb class at the stern of the boat on many occasions. This provides some outstanding light tackle and flyfishing opportunities.

Fishing the Moon in Guatemala

Friday, February 27th, 2009

We have just entered the new moon for fishing in Guatemala, so it seemes like an opportune time to raise it as an issue for comment. Many clients, friends and crazy associates demand that they organise to fish for sailfish in particular pacific sailfish around the new moon. No other time – even fishing in Guatemala – is good enough. Many other factors effect the fishing in Guatemala however – and I was struck when reading of recent studies, in particular one that collated statistics over a decade in Australia – that basically showed some correlation. The remarkable finding however was that there was correlation for the new moon (yellowfin, Mahi) – but also for the full moon (Black Marlin) !!

So much for that theory !

Why such different results ?

According to this study’s authors, currents effect the fishing significantly, and as we all know, the biggest tides occur everywhere during the full and new moons…….and different species react in different ways to the changing of the drive of the currents and the effects on the concentration or otherwise of baitfish.
